Manduca lefeburii bossardi (Taxonomy)
Synonymized with Protoparce lefeburii by Clark, 1928, Proc. New Engl. zool. Club10: 39. Reinstated as a subspecies of Protoparce lefeburii by Mooser, 1940, An. Esc. nac. Cienc. biol. Mexico1: 416. Synonymized with the nominotypical subspecies, and incorrectly attributed to Clark, 1928, Proc. new Engl. zool. Club10: 39, by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII. 15. Reinstated as a subspecies of Manduca lefeburei [sic] by Haxaire, 1995, Bull. Soc. ent. Fr.100: 280 (key), 281; but he also thought that further study might show bossardi to be simply an ecological form, rather than a subspecies. Resynonymized with the nominotypical subspecies by Carcasson & Heppner, 1996, Atlas Neotrop. Lepid.4B: 51. Reinstated as a subspecies by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 56.
Distinguished from Manduca lefeburii lefeburii by the ground colour of the body and forewing uppersides being a paler cinnamon, with darker cinnamon markings; white scaling at the forewing hind angle less extensive and sparser; hindwing upperside a much paler muddy brown, rather than blackish, with a slightly darker outer marginal area, the inner margin almost white rather than yellowish; underside of both wings very pale, not contrasting strongly with the white underside of thorax and abdomen, as they do in Manduca lefeburii lefeburii; abdomen with yellow lateral spots weak, hardly standing out from the background. 42 mm.
