Manduca lucetius (Taxonomy)
Erroneously synonymized with Sphinx hannibal by Burmeister, 1855, Abh. naturforsch. Ges. Halle3 (4) (Sber.): 69. Reinstated as a species by Kirby, 1892, Synonymic Cat. Lepid. Heterocera1: 689. Transferred to Manduca by d'Abrera, [1987], Sphingidae Mundi: 26.
Forewing with some variation in shape: in some specimens it is more elongate than in others Antenna noticeably more slender than in Manduca sexta, slightly thinner than in Manduca diffissa petuniae. Foretarsus with 1st segment with 4 long and several small spines externally, as in Manduca diffissa petuniae. No pulvillus. Forewing upperside with slaty black downy patches very pronounced, forming, together with a patch in the discal cell, a large semicircle filled with black scaling, this contrasting strongly with the paler, russet basal and distal areas; discal and postdiscal lines less curved than in Manduca diffissa petuniae near vein M3, but more so than in Manduca sexta; white dots of the fringe sometimes encroaching on the wing, being slightly enlarged basad, though they may be very small or absent. Uncus quite broad, flattened dorsally and slightly rounded-dilated laterally before the convex apex, which is hooked and pointed.Gnathos rounded apically, similar in shape to that of Manduca diffissa petuniae, but the upturned part of the lateral margin more proximal, so the narrowed apex appears longer.Valve quite broadly sole-shaped, the ventral margin strongly oblique in the distal half.Harpe with ventral process obviously hooked, the tip curving basad; the dentate process large, extending to near or a little beyond the dorsal edge of the valve, sickle-shaped, twisted apically where it is narrowed of variable size and denticulation.Aedeagus with tooth triangular, horizontal, shorter than in Manduca diffissa petuniae. 8th abdominal tergite not sinuate, mesially not obviously impressed, the sides more sclerotised than the disc.Ostial armature similar to that of Manduca occulta, but the ante-ostial lobe shorter.
