Unmistakable. The forewing pattern of a tawny brown outer/posterior area and mottled charcoal costal area, with the very irregular boundary between the two, is unlike any other species of Manduca. Note also the tawny and orange upperside of the head and thorax, the 2 pairs of submarginal black dots and row of marginal black spots on the forewing upperside. Palpus similar in shape to that of Manduca rustica.Foretarsus with 1st segment having 5 or 6 longer, moderately stout spines, and a number of smaller ones.No pulvillus. Antenna of female with distinct traces of bundled ciliae. Uncus strongly convex apically, hooked, pointed.Gnathos bent dorsad apically, sinuate, the 2 lobes pointed.Valve with dorso-apical margin bent inwards.Harpe with dentate upper part not strongly developed dorsad and distad, its margin slanting towards the ventral, curved, horizontal, process.Aedeagus with long apical tooth that slants distad as in Manduca mucosa. Abdomen with 8th tergite sinuate or impressed mesially at apex.Ante-ostial plate with a rather long, triangular lobe, the apex of which is rounded and produced proximally into another, similar lobe or ridge that points proximad forming a slanting cover of a transverse groove proximal to the ante-ostial plate.
