Manduca tucumana
Similar to small specimens of Manduca pellenia and Manduca scutata, but head, thorax, and forewing distinctly paler. Metanotum white anteriorly. Abdomen upperside without white dots at the apices of the segments. Abdomen underside somewhat buffish. Forewing upperside with discal spot, pale lines and fringe almost white, not yellowish as in Manduca pellenia and Manduca scutata; black discal patches from the subcostal vein to M3 contiguous, closer to the discal cell than in Manduca pellenia and Manduca scutata; double discal line distal to the black patches sharply angled at vein M3, the space between the 2 lines more or less white, these discal lines and the postdiscal line (which is itself partly bordered with white), obviously concave between the subcostal vein and M3; the posterior part of the postdiscal line, between vein CuA2 and the hind margin, sharply defined, continuous, thinner posteriorly, enclosing a whitish space in the hind angle.
Male genitalia: Uncus more slender than in Manduca scutata. Harpe intermediate between those of Manduca scutata and Manduca pellenia, the large dentate lobe more curved than in Manduca pellenia, much less so than in Manduca scutata.
The paratype from "Paraguay" listed by Rothschild & Jordan (1903: 81) is a misidentified specimen, probbaly of Manduca brasiliensis or possibly Manduca janira; only genital dissection will permit conclusive determination of which it is.
There is a male in BMNH labelled "Joinville" (illustrated on this site) that is certainly mislabelled.
