Type data:
Holotype ♂ Formosa [Taiwan: Nantou Hsien,] Bukai, iv.1935 [CMNH].
Taxonomic Notes:
Proposed as a subspecies of Marumba cristata. Raised to species status by Eitschberger, 2015, Neue ent. Nachr. 70: 19. Resynonymized with Marumba cristata as a subspecies by Kitching and Rougerie et al., 2018, Biodivers. Data J. 6: e22236.
Of the habitus of this taxon, Eitschberger (2015) stated, “This island species is on average smaller than M. cristata and has a not so strongly crenulated outer edge to the forewing”. In this respect, the moths resemble the smaller specimens of Marumba cristata titan that are found in the mainland Chinese provinces of Fujian and Jiangxi. Of the male genitalia, he stated that “The genitalia (Fig. 24) are smaller than those of M. centrosinica; the aedeagus [phallus] (Fig. 64) is about as long as that of M. centrosinica (Figs 65-68); the vesica (Fig. 794) has no significant cornuti in the central section and can only be compared in vesica spination with a specimen of ?M. cristata from Hainan (Fig. 763); however, at the bulge in the midsection, this laterally has a field of cornuti”. However, these genital characters were based on only a single dissection. Examination of two dissections in the NHMUK (Inoue slides 13337 and 13343) showed that both have a rudimentary field of cornuti in the central section (visible even though the vesicas are not everted), while the smaller size of the genitalia reflects the generally smaller size of the moths. Thus, none of the purported diagnostic genital characters can justify species status for bukaiana. As noted elsewhere under this species, simple isolation on an island does not of itself constitute valid scientific evidence for species status and consequently, given the morphological coherence of the group , species status is rejected and Marumba cristata bukaiana is treated here as a subspecies of Marumba cristata.
