Marumba dyras (Walker, 1856)
Nomenclature
Species:
Marumba dyras (Walker, 1856)
Usage:
valid
Reference:
Sphingidae 250
Type data:
LECTOTYPE ♀ Ceylon [Sri Lanka] (ex coll. J. Wenham) [NHMUK]; implicitly designated by Butler, 1876, Trans. zool. Soc. Lond. 9: 586, who stated, “♂, Canara (Ward), coll. F. Moore; ♀, Ceylon (Wenham). Type, B.M.”, thereby restricting the type to specimen g (a female) of the syntypic series of nine specimens listed by Walker, 1856, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln Br. Mus. 8: 250. The later statement of Swinhoe, 1892, Cat. east. and Aust. Lepid. Heterocera Colln Oxf. Univ. Mus. 1: 27 – “Type. Ceylon, in coll. Templeton” – which would have implicitly designated specimen a (a male) of the syntypic series listed by Walker, 1856, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln Br. Mus. 8: 250, is thus invalid as a lectotype designation (contra Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 144).
Taxonomic Notes:
Transferred to Marumba by Moore, 1882, Lepid. Ceylon 2: 9.
