Nephele comma
Upperside of body and forewings very variable in colour, ranging from dark olive-green to reddish-brown and pale ochre-brown. Abdomen upperside with black lateral patches reduced in size, those on segments 2 and 3 indistinct; pale dorsal area of segment 4 as wide (transversely) as the lateral black patch. Hindbasitarsal combs and combs of apical spurs strongly developed. Forewing upperside with dark irregular transverse bands (better seen on reddish specimens); discal spot a comma-shaped spot widest distad (form comma), a minute point or absent (form derasa); submarginal line sharply marked, almost straight posterior of M2. Hindwing upperside various shades of olive-green, with a darker margin. Forewing length: 32-39 mm.
There is a single old specimen in NHMUK labelled "Morondava, Madagascar", together with several other old specimens labelled simply "Madagascar". It is currently unclear whether these are simply mislabelled or whether they are genuinely from Madagascar (where otherwise Nephele comma appears to be replaced by Nephele charoba stat. rev. [q.v.]). If the specimens of Nephele comma are from Madagascar, then it may possibly be restricted to the west coast.
There are single specimens each from Iran and Pakistan in the SMCR, but whether these are strays, mislabelled, or genuinely represent a major eastward extension of this African species into Asia, remains to be confirmed; they are not mapped.
