Pachysphinx occidentalis (Taxonomy)
General description:
Proposed as a [geographic] variety of Smerinthus modestus [sic]. Raised to species status and transferred to Pachysphinx by Hodges, 1971, in Dominick et. al.Moths Amer. N. of Mexico21: 90 (key), 91.
Morphology:
Large, rough-scaled Forewing upperside with discal spot large; discal lines strongly crenate Hindwing upperside with pale inner area of hindwing more extended than in Pachysphinx modesta modesta, proximal black bar on inner margin narrow and long. Uncus narrower than in Pachysphinx modesta.Gnathos narrower than in Pachysphinx modesta, and more obviously rounded at end. Harpe with lobes unequal, the upper one generally much smaller. Aedeagus with tooth much smaller than in Pachysphinx modesta.
