TYPE(S) ♂ Mexico: Tehuacan [Tehuacán] [CMNH; ZSBS]. There is a male in the ZSBS labelled "Type" and a male in CMNH labelled "paratype" that is probably a syntype.

Proposed as a subspecies of Calasymbolus myops. Queried as a synonym of the nominotypical subspecies by d'Abrera, 1987, Sphingidae Mundi: 92. Synonymized with the nominotypical species by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.19. Reinstated as a subspecies by Carcasson & Heppner, 1996, Atlas Neotrop. Lepid. 4B: 53. Raised to species status by Eitschberger, 2002, Neue ent. Nachr. 53: 87.
