Smerinthus cerisyi
Variable in wing length, forewing termen shape, colour pattern and genitalia, and there are also seasonal forms. The species is closest to Smerinthus astarte but: hindwing upperside with the black mark in the centre of the blue area of the eyespot circular or diamond shaped whereas in Smerinthus astarte the blue spot is divided by a downwardly angulate band that touches the lateral, black borders.
Male genitalia: Uncus broad, narrowing somewhat to a rounded apex. Gnathos with a triangular medial lobe, usually slender. Valve narrower than in Smerinthus kindermannii, with a prominent dorsal subapical ridge (rudimentary in Smerinthus kindermannii); prominent longitudinal fold below ridge. Harpe with a rather pointed apex, the free apex hardly developed in Smerinthus saliceti. Phallus with a conical apical tooth projecting laterally; vesica with a patch of cornuti, as in Smerinthus ocellata.
Female genitalia: not distinguished from those of Smerinthus astarte. Sterigma small, membranous. Ostium bursae with anterior edge not ridged and no more strongly sclerotised than the sides; ostium bursae covered by sternum A7 lying in a deep membranous cavity.
