Smerinthus kindermannii
Sexually dimorphic. Similar to Smerinthus ocellata but the forewing is elongated and the termen strongly dentate. Variation in the intensity of the colour and pattern is temperature and humidity related. Abdomen upperside segments edged with white. Forewing upperside with cryptic pattern more distinct and outlined in light brown or buff. Hindwing upperside with tornal eyespot unformed, instead a black marking divided by two grey lines, thus distinguishing it from those species of the genus with a fully- or better-formed eyespot, including Smerinthus ocellata.
Male genitalia: Uncus broader apically than in Smerinthus ocellata. Gnathos longer than in Smerinthus ocellata. Harpe similar to that of Smerinthus ocellata, with a spoon-shaped apical process. Phallus with a conical tooth at end; vesica bearing a patch of pale cornuti.
Female genitalia: Sterigma resembling that of Smerinthus ocellata, but even less sclerotised proximally; ridge before ostium bursae with a broader medial sinus.
Records from Russia (Primorskii Krai) are highly dubious and require confirmation; they are not mapped.
