Smerinthus ocellata
Variable in colour pattern intensity on the forewing and in the colour of the hindwing. Very similar in appearance to other Palaearctic Smerinthus species, but it bears an apical claw on the foretibia. Hindwing upperside with tornal eyespot full and circular, other than in form ollivryi Oberthür, where it may be replaced by a buff brown patch.
Male genitalia: Uncus triangular, apex rounded rather than pointed. Gnathos with large medial element. Valva irregularly sole-shaped, broadly rounded at end. Harpe elongate, simple. Phallus with a heavy conical carinate tooth projecting laterally at end; vesica with a patch of curved cornuti.
Female genitalia: Sterigma not strongly sclerotized, wrinkled. Ostium bursae with a transverse ridge forming lower (anterior) lip; ridge intended medially.
