In the original description, Jordan, 1931, Novit. zool. 36: 248-249, listed the syntype series as follows: “Pyrenees, Luchon and Cauterets, July 1906, 5♂♂, 3♀♀. —— Algeria: Hammam Rirha and Mt. Zaccar, May and June 1913, 2 ♂♂; Les Pins, Oran, August 1918 and Sidi bel Abbès, Oran, September x.1917, 2♂♂, 2♀♀. —— Spain:1, San Ildefonso, Segovia, vi viii. 1906, 2♂♂.” The identity of the presumed male and female syntype in CMNH remains to be confirmed, but there is at least one specimen with appropriate data (“Luchon, vii.1906 (W.R. & E. H.)”). However, there are two other specimens in NHMUK, a male labelled “Luchon, 3.vii.1905 (W.R. & E. H.)” and a female labelled “Luchon, 12.vii.1905 (W.R. & E. H.)”, that may be the other two syntypes.
Taxonomic Notes:
UNPUBLISHED COMB. REV.
Proposed as a subspecies of Hyloicus pinastri. Synonymized with Sphinx pinastri pinastri by Kernbach, 1969, Dt. ent. Z. (N.F.) 16: 107. Implicitly reinstated as a subspecies of Hyloicus pinastri by de Freina & Witt, 1987, Bombyces und Sphinges der Westpalaearktis 1: 409. Raised to species status by Eitschberger, Danner & Surholt, 1989, Atalanta 20: 261. Resynonymized with Sphinx pinastri as a subspecies by Pittaway, 1993, The hawkmoths of the Western Palaearctic: 88. Reinstated as a species and transferred to Hyloicus by Danner, Eitschberger & Surholt, 1998, Herbipoliana 4(1): 52. Transferred back to Sphinx by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 67.
Unpublished phylogenomic analyses confirm that to prevent paraphyly of Sphinx, the genus Hyloicus must be accepted as valid (as asserted by Zolotuhin & Yevdoshenko (2019) (STI 22079). However, they did not formally include all the relevant species in Hyloicus and Hyloicus maurorum is one of those that remains to be formally transferred.
