-
Subtribe: AcosmeryginaGenus: Acosmeryx

Sphingidae 181
Type data:
SYNTYPES 6 [4♂ 2♀] [Bangladesh:] Silhet [Sylhet] (3 [2♂ 1♀] ex coll. Argent; 3 [2♂ 1♀] ex coll. Stainforth) [NHMUK]. The three syntypes ex coll. Argent, 2♂ and 1♀, are also the syntypes of Acosmeryx cinerea (q.v.). However, one of these, a male, is a specimen of Acosmeryx sericeus. Of the three syntypes ex coll. Stainforth, 1♂ and 1♀, are specimens of Acosmeryx sericeus but the second male is a specimen of Acosmeryx shervillii. This suggests that the labels of this specimen and the ex coll. Argent Acosmeryx cinerea syntype may have been inadvertently swapped sometime in the past. The female ex coll Stainforth bears a label with the correct locality (“Silhet”) but an incorrect accession number “49.51” (rather than the correct “47.51”) and is labelled “Type”” in Butler’s handwriting.
Taxonomic Notes:
Transferred to Acosmeryx by Butler, 1876, Trans. zool. Soc. Lond. 9: 544. Synonymized with Acosmeryx ancea [sic] by Hampson, 1893, Fauna Brit. India 1: 81. Reinstated as a species by Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 527 (key), 530.
