Unzela japix subsp. discrepans
According to Rothschild & Jordan (1903: 400), very similar to Unzela japix japix but posterior part of the median band narrower and central portion more sharply angulate distally, and the third white line distal to the posterior portion of the median band more proximal so that the triangular tawny olive patch situated on the inner margin proximal of the tornus is therefore larger. However, examination of the current series of both subspecies in NHMUK suggests that none of these characters holds and all the variation is individual. DNA barcodes do suggest a division within Unzela japix, but between Central and northern South American populations; this needs further investigation. Unfortunately, there are no (accessible) DNA barcodes for SE Brazilian specimens currently available.
Male genitalia: As in Unzela japix japix but phallus lobe very short and broad.
This subspecies is restricted to SE Brazil.
