Type(s) West Indies [coll. L. Juliaans]. Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 699, doubted whether Cramer's figure was taken from a West Indian specimen, "unless the owner of the type included Surinam in the West Indies (see p. 525) [Darapsa pholus]".

Synonymized with Chaerocampa chiron by Walker, 1856, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln Br. Mus. 8: 132. Reinstated as a species by Grote, 1865, Proc. ent. Soc. Philad. 5: 50. Resynonymized as a variety with Chaerocampa chiron by Grote, 1871, Trans. Amer. ent. Soc. 3: 184. Reinstated as a species by Boisduval, 1875, in: Boisduval & Guenée, Hist. nat. Insectes (Spec. gén. Lépid. Hétérocères) 1: 268, 271. Resynonymized (inversely) with Xylophanes chiron by Maassen, 1880, Stettin. ent. Ztg 41: 57, who considered chiron to be simply a damp-induced brown form. Raised to subspecies status by Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 698.
