Xylophanes elara
Upperside of wings and body olive-green (turning orange-brown if exposed to high humidity). Distal margin of forewing strongly excavate below falcate apex, then convex. Dorsal scales of antennae basally brown, distally cream before apex. Thorax unicolorous. Abdomen dorsally with a thin darker olive-greenish olive medial line. Underside of abdomen whitish-grey. Forewing upperside with a small, conspicuous, black discal spot; postmedial lines straight, oblique; first to third lines faint; fourth much stronger, running to apex; fifth also running from apex but not distinct except apically; submarginal line faint, highlighted by a row of faint vein spots. Base of forewing underside with a greyish-black triangular patch that just enters the discal cell; postmedial line that corresponds to the fourth line of the upperside conspicuous, accentuated by a dot at the costa; apical line indistinct. Basal half of hindwing upperside black; median band buff suffused with olive-green. Hindwing underside with a weak, pale grey medial line; postmedial line represented by a row of elongate vein spots.
Male genitalia: Uncus truncate, distinctly sinuate. Gnathos narrow, tapering to a point, narrower than uncus distally. Harpe quite stout, extreme tip curved upwards, dorsal edge irregularly notched. Phallus with right lobe of apical process dentate, directed proximad; left lobe with a long row of teeth, the thickened dorso-apical margin rounded.
Distribution should be taken as provisional pending resolution of the taxonomy of the group (Xylophanes columbiana, Xylophanes hydrata, Xylophanes kaempferi).
