Xylophanes fernandezi
The triangular projection on the underside of the uncus is not consistently present in Xylophanes tersa tersa and thus is not a diagnostic character for separating Xylophanes fernandezi. The other features of both the male and female genitalia of Xylophanes fernandezi all appear to fall within the range of individual variation of these structures in Xylophanes tersa tersa. Nevertheless, the habitus of Xylophanes fernandezi suggests it is not a melanic form of Xylophanes tersa tersa.
Similar to Xylophanes tersa tersa and Xylophanes resta but differs in its dark, monotonous appearance. Head and thorax dorsally dark brown to brown-black. Dorsal scaling of antenna dirty white. Abdomen dorsally ash-brown with five dark longitudinal lines; basal black patches present; laterally stripes paler rust-brown. Forebasitarsus with outer row of spines. Tibiae externally white. Outer apical spur of hindtibia less than half as long as inner. Forewing upperside ground colour ash-brown; postmedian lines indistinct, fourth line most prominent. Hindwing upperside as Xylophanes tersa tersa but median band consisting of a row of cream-coloured spots. 44-47 mm. Ventral edge of uncus beyond midpoint even, lacking the ventral triangular section of Xylophanes tersa tersa and Xylophanes resta. Gnathos more strongly sclerotized than in Xylophanes tersa tersa; apex dorsally serrate. Harpe resembles that of Xylophanes tersa tersa but more robust. Aedeagus more strongly sclerotized than in Xylophanes tersa tersa. Antrum short, strongly sclerotized. Ductus bursae long, gradually widening into corpus bursae. Corpus bursae significantly larger than that of Xylophanes tersa tersa. Signum long, extending to the anterior end of the corpus bursae (similar to that of Xylophanes tersa tersa and much longer than that of Xylophanes resta).
