Xylophanes porioni
Immediately distinguishable from all other species of Xylophanes by the combination of the broad, compact shape of the wings, suffused brown pattern of the forewing upperside, and the arrangement of spots forming the medial band of the hindwing upperside. Ground colour of upperside of body and forewings reddish-brown. Forewing upperside similar in general appearance to that of Xylophanes rufescens but pattern of lines and spots rather more contrasting; first postmedial line diffuse, running to the costa rather than the apex; second and third postmedial lines weakly developed, also running to the costa; fourth postmedial line present from apex to M3, below which it is replaced by vein dots, or represented only by a row of vein dots. Medial band of hindwing upperside of the same general form as in the Xylophanes crotonis and Xylophanes tersa groups, consisting of a series of off-white (rather than pale yellow) triangular spots that increase in size from the apex towards the anal angle. FWL: 39-40 mm.
