Xylophanes vagliai
Similar to Xylophanes aristor and Xylophanes rhodochlora. Forewings relatively short and broad, with an almost straight outer margin (relatively longer and narrower with a distinctly convex outer margin in Xylophanes aristor and Xylophanes rhodochlora). Anterior half of thorax upperside separated from the remainder by a fine white line. Tegula edged in grey along its inner (dorsal), but not its outer (lateral), margin (the reverse pattern is found in Xylophanes rhodochlora); also with a median line of grey scales. Upperside of abdomen with a broad, grey dorsal stripe (as in Xylophanes aristor, but which is absent in Xylophanes rhodochlora); lateral stripe vivid yellow. Forewing upperside similar to Xylophanes rhodochlora but ground colour bronzy green with pearly reflections (Xylophanes rhodochlora is a darker, emerald green with less conspicuous pearly reflections); discal spot smaller (as in Xylophanes nabuchodonosor); first and fourth postmedian lines darker green, highlighted along their inner edges in pearly grey; fringe orange. Marginal area of forewing underside of the same general brick-red colour as the rest of the wing, barely delineated by a grey line that is toothed between M2 and M3. 44 mm (holotype). Wingspan: average = 95 mm (n = 3). Identical to male but antennae thinner, and forewing broader and more rounded. Wingspan: 100 mm. Similar to Xylophanes rhodochlora but: Uncus apically more rounded (less truncate). Harpe more curved, less tapered apically Apical process of aedeagus rounded; left lobe longer than in Xylophanes rhodochlora; right lobe less strongly recurved, ending in three small teeth, the middle one of which is longer than the other two.
