Type data:
NEOTYPE ♂ Venezuela: Aragua, Maracay, Rancho Grande station, 1.ix.1983, 23h 45 (J. Haxaire & J.Y. Rasplus) [NHMUK]; designated by Vaglia & Haxaire, 2005, Lambillionea 105: 5, although it is questionable whether the neotype designation is valid as it does not fulfill all the criteria required by the Code for neotype designation. Sphinx gannascus was originally described from an unstated number of specimens, allegedly from the Cape of Good Hope, in the collection of R. de Breukelerwaerth. Vaglia & Haxaire (2005) were unable to trace any of these specimens. The erroneous type locality was first noted by Boisduval, 1875, in: Boisduval & Guenée, Hist. nat. Insectes (Spec. gén. Lépid. Hétérocères) 1: 183.
Taxonomic Notes:
Transferred to Adhemarius by Oiticica, 1939, Bolm biol. Clube zool. Bras. (N.S.) 4: 271.
