Macroglossum corythus subsp. novirlandum d'Abrera, 1987 [Invalid]

Proposed as a subspecies of Macroglossum corythus (although the legend to the illustrations on p.167 appear to give species status). Synonymized with Macroglossum corythus pylene by Kitching and Rougerie et al., 2018, Biodivers. Data J. 6: e22236. d'Abrera (1987: 166) gave several features of the habitus to distinguish Macroglossum corythus novirlandum from other subspecies, in particular the more reddish-brown ground colour, more chrome yellow underside of the base of the hindwing underside, and the fan tail being basally black and distally yellow in equal proportions. However, although these features do characterize the holotype and paratype, other specimens in the NHMUK from New Ireland are indistinguishable from specimens of Macroglossum corythus pylene from New Britain and New Guinea. Consequently, there is here considered to be no justification to maintain separate subspecies status for Macroglossum corythus novirlandum.
