Proposed as a subspecies of Oxyambulyx semifervens. Implicitly treated as a species by Hogenes & Treadaway, 1998, Nachr. entomol. Ver. Apollo Suppl. 17: 24; a status that was confirmed by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 79.
