Taxonomic Notes:
Proposed as a subspecies of Leucophlebia afra. Synonymized with Leucophlebia afra xanthopis by Carcasson, 1968, Jl E. Afr. nat. Hist. Soc. natn. Mus. 26 (3): 49, who considered it to be a form in which the lower margin of the forewing band is entire, as opposed to being indented between the veins. Treated as a subspecies of Leucophlebia afra by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.12. Resynonymized with Leucophlebia afra xanthopis by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 53. Reinstated as a species by Kitching and Rougerie et al., 2018, Biodivers. Data J. 6: e22236.
In the south of its distribution, Leucophlebia rosulenta has an even outer edge to the pale yellow band on the forewing upperside, as described by Rothschild & Jordan (1916), which thus contrasts with Leucophlebia xanthopis in which the yellow scaling is produced along the veins, giving a serrate appearance. However, this serrate pattern gradually develops in Leucophlebia rosulenta populations as one moves north, so that in western Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and the extreme northwest of Tanzania, the outer edge is as serrate as in Leucophlebia xanthopis and led Carcasson (1968) to synonymize Leucophlebia rosulenta with Leucophlebia xanthopis as a form. Such specimens were later described by Eitschberger (2003) as Leucophlebia muehlei and Leucophlebia paul, both of which are here considered to be junior synonyms of Leucophlebia rosulenta.
