Taxonomic Notes:
Synonymized with Ambulyx aglaia by Melichar et al., 2018, A field guide to hawkmoths of the state of Karnataka, India: 27.
Melichar et al. (2018) (STI 21973) provided no justification for their synonymy. However, analysis of DNA barcode data shows that the holotype and paratype of Ambulyx sinjaevi are only 0.15% divergent from other specimens identified as Ambulyx aglaia, among which the maximum divergence is 0.31%, and all samples of both taxa comprise a single BIN, ABY9087. Although the holotype and paratype of Ambulyx sinjaevi differ somewhat in wing colour and pattern - ground colour orangish (greyish is many Ambulyx aglaia) and a large subbasal costal spot on the forewing upperside (absent in most Ambulyx aglaia, a small spot sometimes present) – these features appear to be individually variable and thus not indicative of separate species status for Ambulyx sinjaevi.
