Type data:
TYPE(S) [♂] United States: California (Lorquin) [CMNH].
Boisduval received this species from Lorquin's first trip. Although Lorquin stopped a few days in Chile, Boisduval felt that Sphinx strobi came from California not South America. Later, Boisduval, 1875, in: Boisduval & Guenée, Hist. nat. Insectes (Spec. gén. Lépid. Hétérocères) 1: 101, stated that “M. Lorquin, qui avait envoyé ce Sphinx à Becker, croit se rappeler en avoir trouvé deux ou trois exemplaires au pied d'un arbre vert, pin ou sapin, dans la chaîne de la Juba” [M. Lorquin, who had sent this Sphinx to Becker, believes he remembers having found two or three examples on an evergreen tree, a pine or a fir, in the Juba range]. Juba is a misspelling of “Yuba”, a settlement (now a city) in the Sacramento Valley of California. The mountains in question would be those to the east, the rivers of which were panned for gold during the Gold Rush. However, Boisduval (1875) went on to say "Nous craignons qu'il n'y ait là une erreur de habitat" [We believe that there could have been there an error of habitat.].
