Type species: Sphinx nessus Cramer, 1777, by subsequent designation by Grote, 1873, Bull. Buffalo Soc. nat. Sci. 1: 19. Sphinx nessus Cramer, 1777 is a junior primary homonym of Sphinx nessus Drury, 1773, Illust. nat. Hist. exot. Insects 2: 46, index, pl. 27, fig. 1. There is no new replacement name but Amphion floridensis Clark, 1920, established as Amphion nessus floridensis Clark, 1920, Proc. New. Engl. zool. Club 7: 73, and treated by Hodges, 1971, in Dominick et al. Moths Amer. N. of Mexico 21: 136 as a junior subjective synonym of Sphinx nessus Cramer, 1777, is available as a subjective replacement name.
