LECTOTYPE ♂ [Indonesia:] North Celebes [Sulawesi Utara], Tondano [BMNH]; designated by Rothschild, 1919, Novit. zool. 26: 205.
Taxonomic Notes:
Proposed as a subspecies of Compsogene panopus. Raised to species status by Eitschberger, 2006, Neue ent. Nachr. 59: 3. Resynonymized with Amplypterus panopus as a subspecies by Kitching and Rougerie et al., 2018, Biodivers. Data J. 6: e22236.
Eitschberger (2006) considered that the various diagnostic features of the wing pattern and male and female genitalia were sufficient to warrant species status for celebensis. However, many are quite variable both within and among populations, such as the shape of the gnathos and harpe, degree of development of the apical thorn on the phallus and the relative lengths of the diverticula on the vesica. Consequently, they are here considered to be of subspecific value.
