Amplypterus panopus subsp. karnatakaensis Melichar & Řezáč, [2014]

Proposed as a subspecies of Amplypterus panopus. Melichar & Řezáč ([2014]: 87) diagnosed Amplypterus panopus karnatakaensis on the basis that the SW Indian populations were darker than the nominotypical subspecies and the phallus lacks an apical tooth. However, examination of the long series in the NHMUK shows that SW Indian moths are not generally darker than those of the nominotypical subspecies. Furthermore, the apical tooth of the phallus can be missing in specimens of Amplypterus panopus panopus from other localities; e.g. Jiangxi (Eitschberger, 2006: 65, GP 4100) and Vietnam (Eitschberger, 2006: 76, GP 4110). However, DNA barcoding suggests that the populations from SW India are as different from the nominotypical subspecies as are those from Sulawesi, the Philippines and the Lesser Sunda Islands. Consequently, the subspecies status of Amplypterus panopus karnatakaensis is retained.
