Proposed as a subspecies of Cechenena lineosa. Raised to species status by Clark, 1924, Proc. New Engl. zool. Club 9: 11. Synonymized with the nominotypical subspecies by Clark, 1928, Proc. New Engl. zool. Club 10: 37, as simply a large form. Reinstated as a subspecies of Cechenena lineosa by Seitz, 1929, in Seitz (ed.), Die Gross-Schmett. Erde 10: 570.; then as a species by Inoue, 1990, Tinea 12: 256. Resynonymized with Cechenena lineosa as a subspecies by d'Abrera, 1987] Sphingidae Mundi: 204. Reinstated as a species by Haruta, 1992, Tinea 13 (suppl. 2): 91. Transferred to Cechetra by Zolotuhin & Ryabov, 2012, Hawkmoths of Vietnam: 206.
