Notonagemia analis subsp. gressitti (Clark, 1937)

UNPUBLISHED SYN. & STAT. REV. Proposed as a subspecies of Meganoton analis. Queried as a synonym of the nominotypical subspecies by d'Abrera, 1987, Sphingidae Mundi: 14. Treated as a species by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.16. Resynonymized with Meganoton analis as a subspecies by Inoue et al., 1996, Moths of Thailand 2: 19. Synonymized with Notonagemia analis tranquillaris by Zolotuhin & Yevdoshenko, 2019, Hawkmoths of Russia and adjacent territories: 101, 436. Zolotuhin & Yevdoshenko (2019: 436) (STI 22079) claimed that “To designate Taiwanese populations [of Notonagemia analis], the name gressitti Clark, 1937, has been traditionally used, but it is not the oldest one and therefore shall to be changed to tranquillaris Butler, 1876, comb. nov.” They then referred to the Taiwanese subspecies of N. analis as N. analis tranquillaris. However, the type locality of Diludia tranquillaris Butler, 1876, is “Darjeeling” in north India (see Butler, 1876) (STI 17080), not Taiwan. This locality accords with the localities in Burma, Thailand and China (Fujian) that were accepted by Zolotuhin & Yevdoshenko (2019: 100) in their neighbor-joining tree as being examples of the nominotypical subspecies. In the absence of any further reasoning, the assertion by Zolotuhin & Yevdoshenko (2019) that tranquillaris is the oldest name applicable to the Taiwanese populations of N. analis is totally incomprehensible and is therefore rejected. Consequently, Diludia tranquillaris is resynonymized with the nominotypical subspecies of N. analis, and Notonagemia analis gressitti is reinstated as the valid name for the Taiwanese population.
