Type data:
Type genus: Sataspes Moore, [1858], in Horsfield & Moore, Cat. lepid. Insects Mus. Hon. East-India Company 1: 261.
Taxonomic Notes:
Zolotuhin & Ryabov (2012) erected this tribe for the genus Sataspes, species of which have a highly apomorphic habitus related to diurnal activity and mimicry of large Hymenoptera. As such, it has been difficult to recognize synapomorphic characters between members of this genus (and also the closely related Afrosataspes; see Kitching & Cadiou, 2000: 17) and their putative relatives in either wing pattern or genital morphology. DNA sequence data will doubtless help but the group was unrepresented in the cladogram of Kawahara et al. (2009). For now, the tribe is morphologically isolated within Smerinthinae and other possible genera for inclusion remain unknown.
