Type genus: Dilophonota Burmeister, 1855, Abh. naturforsch. Ges. Halle 3(4)(Sber): 69.
Taxonomic Notes:
The analysis of the higher classification of Sphingidae using five nuclear genes by Kawahara et al. (2009: Figure 3) demonstrated that the group of genera comprising Aellopos, Callionima, Erinnyis, Eupyrrhoglossum, Hemeroplanes, Isognathus, Kloneus, Madoryx, Nyceryx, Oryba, Pachylia, Pachylioides, Perigonia and Pseudosphinx formed a well-supported monophyletic group, for a restricted concept of the subtribe Dilophonotina is here recognized. Following Kitching & Cadiou (2000), the genera Baniwa, Phryxus, Protaleuron and Stolidoptera are also included here. The genera Aleuron, Cautethia, Enyo, Himantoides, Pachygonidia and Unzela are removed to a new concept of subtribe Philampelina (q.v.). Subtribe Dilophonotina is diagnosed by the double uncus and gnathos and an apical process on the phallus bearing a row of short, stout, marginal setae (except Callionima).
