Taxonomic Notes:
Transferred to Psilogramma by Kitching and Rougerie et al., 2018, Biodivers. Data J. 6: e22236.
Afrogramma does not differ appreciably in habitus or genital structure from Psilogramma. Both genera lack a harpe (there is a slight fold on Psilogramma asirensis compared to a total lack in Psilogramma but this is not a significant difference) and both have a large, anteriorly directed, apical "fishtail-shaped" process on the phallus. Furthermore, Rothschild & Jordan (1903: 42) characterized the labial palp of Psilogramma as "differing from that of all the other species of the present subfamily [Sphinginae] in the second segment having a naked stripe over the inner surface (as prolongation of the naked stripe of the first segment)". This unique diagnostic character, which was not mentioned by Eitschberger & Melichar (2016), is present in Psilogramma asirensis and confirms the generic placement of this species. The only feature in which Psilogramma asirensis differs from other members of the genus is in the shape of the stridulatory scales on the valve; in Psilogramma asirensis, these are relatively narrow, compared with the broader scales of the other species. However, this alone does not provide sufficient justification to warrant a separate genus, especially in view of the unique labial palp synapomorphy noted above that the present species shares with all other Psilogramma.
