Synonymized with Macroglossum semifasciata as a subspecies by Kitching and Rougerie et al., 2018, Biodivers. Data J. 6: e22236.
The very close similarity in genital structure shows that this taxon is simply the Sulawesi representative of Macroglossum semifasciata, with the overall darker coloration typical of many species of Macroglossum and other Sphingidae on this island. Consequently, there is no justification for treating Macroglossum pseudonigellum as a species and thus, for consistency with the approach adopted here with regard to other similar cases of large Macroglossum, it is here considered best treated as a subspecies of Macroglossum semifasciata.
