Callambulyx kitchingi
Very similar to Callambulyx schintlmeisteri but differing in being on average smaller, the antemedial line of the forewing upperside projecting more towards the wing base on vein 1A+2A (although this feature is somewhat variable), the narrower and medially constricted uncus, the narrower broader apex of the harpe and the longer juxta process.
The illustration of the valve given by Mell, 1958, Dt. ent. Z. (N.F.) 5: 204 (misidentified as Callambulyx poecilus) is inaccurate, as noted by Inoue, 1990, Akitu (N.S.) 112: 1. Unfortunately, the drawing of the harpe of the holotype of Callambulyx kitchingi given by Cadiou, 1996, Ent. Africana 1: 23, also appears to be incorrect in that it lacks the terminal upcurved hook. Whether this is due to an inaccurate representation of the specimen or the specimen being damaged remains to be determined from a re-examination of the genitalia preparation. At present, the whereabouts of this preparation in NHMUK (or elsewhere) is unknown.
Callambulyx kitchingi has recently been recorded from Lang Son province, Vietnam, and Chiang Rai province, Thailand. The identity of the former with populations in China has been confirmed by DNA barcode analysis; they all cluster tightly into a single BIN (AAC2201). Callambulyx kitchingi is replaced in central Vietnam by its close relative, Callambulyx schintlmeisteri.
