"Xanthopan genus-group"

valid
Taxonomic Notes:
This informal taxon is used here to contain those genera previously referred to as tribe Cocytiina. The analysis of the higher classification of Sphingidae using five nuclear genes by Kawahara et al. (2009: Figure 2) demonstrated that the group of genera comprising Cocytius, Neococytius and Xanthopan formed a well-supported monophyletic group, and following Kitching & Cadiou (2000) and Kitching (2002, 2003), the genera Amphimoea, Cerberonoton and Panogena are also included. However, the taxon name Cocytiina cannot be used for this group as it is a junior homonym of Cocytides Boisduval, 1874, and a formal name has yet to be erected. A more inclusive concept of the genus Cocytius (q.v.) is followed here than the unnecessarily oversplit concept proposed by Eitschberger (2006).
Nomenclature notes:
Cocytiina Tutt, 1904 is a junior homonym of Cocytiini (as Cocytides) Boisduval, 1874, Rev. Mag. Zool. (sér. 3) 2: 46 (Insecta, Lepidoptera, Erebidae), and there is no replacement name. Amphonygidi Tutt, 1904, Nat. Hist. Br. Lepid. 4: 273, was proposed in synonymy with Cocytiidi but has not been treated before 1961 as an available name and adopted as the name of a taxon; hence it is unavailable under Article 11.6 of the Code.
