Cautethia noctuiformis subsp. bredini
Cary (1970: 268; 967) characterized Cautethia noctuiformis bredini as having pale grey forewing uppersides with very fine, sharply defined transverse lines. In contrast, Cautethia noctuiformis noctuiformis had forewing uppersides in which the areas basal to the antemedian line, and between the postmedian and submarginal lines, were almost entirely black and the transverse lines were thick with somewhat indistinct edges. However, Cary (1970; 967) appear to have compared Cautethia noctuiformis bredini, not with Cautethia noctuiformis noctuiformis, but with a female Cautethia grotei grotei and the habitus features she described were actually characteristic of the female of this sexually dimorphic species (Kitching & Cadiou, 2000: 87-88; 5884).
Hindwing upperside differs from Cautethia noctuiformis noctuiformis in lacking the thin black line along 1A+2A that divides the basal yellow area. Tegumen basally broad, narrowed posteriorly.Vinculum very narrow.Saccus produced as a tongue-shaped process.Uncus very stout, ending in a heavily sclerotized blunt point.Gnathos stout, enlarged distally; divided apically into two short, blunt, heavily sclerotized lobes.Juxta triangular, postero-lateral corners bearing minute teeth.Valve broadest basally, gently tapered to a narrowly rounded apex.Harpe cup-shaped with a several small teeth within.Aedeagus longer than harpe, slightly downcurved, dorso-apically produced as a smooth, sharp point (this point bears small teeth in Cautethia noctuiformis noctuiformis and Cautethia noctuiformis choveti).vesica armed with two small patches of slender cornuti
