Cautethia spuria
Very similar to Cautethia yucatana but larger, forewings longer and apically more pointed. Forewing upperside very similar to Cautethia yucatana but dark bar at tornus more a broad triangular patch than a clearly defined stripe.
Male genialia: Uncus and gnathos larger than in the other Cautethia species; uncus slightly shorter then gnathos in lateral view, broader than in Cautethia grotei grotei and Cautethia noctuiformis noctuiformis, apex strongly convex, apical edge truncate-sinuate with the angle acute; gnathos large, apex divided and hollowed in a peculiar manner, divided into three lobes, one medial and ventral, short, sinuate-truncate, thin, acute in lateral view, the other two lobes rounded, incrassate, densely clothed with short spines.Harpe triangular, pointed but not projecting. Phallus with small apical dentate process, pointing distad.
Records from Arizona and Texas are considered to be of stray individuals.
