Clanis euroa subsp. baratana Brechlin, 1998

Proposed as a subspecies of Clanis euroa. Raised to species level by Eitschberger, 2004, Neue ent. Nachr. 58: 57. Resynonymized with Clanis euroa as a subspecies by Kitching and Rougerie et al., 2018, Biodivers. Data J. 6: e22236. Brechlin (1998) (STI 16983) distinguished Clanis euroa baratana from the nominotypical subspecies on the basis of small differences in forewing shape, colour pattern and male genitalia. Eitschberger (2004) (STI 17744) described further small differences in the male genitalia, laying particular emphasis on the more perpendicular everted vesica in Clanis euroa baratana, and considered that these features warranted full species status for the taxon. Neither author appears to have studied specimens from the type locality of Timor. However, the vesica of a specimen from that island illustrated here (http://sphingidae.myspecies.info/taxonomy/term/732) clearly agrees in shape with those illustrated by Brechlin and by Eitschberger. However, the degree of morphological difference between the two taxa, compared to differences among other Clanis species, is very small and it is here considered best treated as a subspecies of Clanis euroa.
