Gnathothlibus vanuatuensis
Differs from Gnathothlibus eras and Gnathothlibus saccoi by the complete absence of any long hair scales on the foretarsi and clear reduction in length and thickness of the long hair scales covering fore tibiae in males. Upperside of head, thorax and abdomen uniform medium brown, with a thin lateral creamy-brown stripe from base of antenna to posterior of thorax. Labial palps dark brown above, off-white with some dark scales below. Thorax ventrally with wide creamy-brown patch posterior to labial palps. Abdominal segments each laterally with reddish-brown posterior margin contrasting with brown ground colour, abdomen with five small lateral black spots surrounded by white. Forewing upperside ground colour brown, with darker markings; subbasal band short irregular, slightly darker; small black discal spot with brown-white centre; postmedial line prominent, dark, mostly straight from costa to inner margin; marginal band lighter brown, irregular. Hindwing upperside ground colour orange; marginal band dark brown from apex to tornus, at least 2 mm wide at M3, thinnest at apex; inner margin of band irregular. Forewing underside ground colour burnt orange, speckled with dark brown distally; irregular dark brown submarginal line from apex to tornus Hindwing underside orange-brown, heavily speckled with dark brown; marginal area darker from apex to tornus; antemedial band dark, mostly straight, thickest at costa. Male forewing length 37.5-44.3 mm, mean 40.7 mm; female forewing length: 39.5-48.8 mm.
Male genitalia: Uncus slightly shorter and more robust than in Gnathothlibus australiensis and Gnathothlibus eras, with a more prominent ventral tooth and less curved dorsal margin. Upper margin of valve nearly straight.
Female genitalia: Anterior apophyses spatulate on distal half. Posterior apophyses long, slender, minutely enlarged subapically. Signum very long and slender, extending full length of corpus bursae and consisting of a pair of closely parallel lines of cornuti.
There is a specimen in BMNH that matches Gnathothlibus vanuatuensis from Honiara, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands; its identification needs to be critically confirmed.
