Hoplistopus penricei
There are two colour forms, f. penricei, in which the ground colour is smoky-grey, and f. butti, in which the ground colour is whitish-grey. They are connected by intermediate forms.
Body and wings upper- and undersides ranging from very uniform smoky grey (f. penricei) to whitish-grey (f. butti).
Form penricei: Antennae with scaling greyish white. Abdomen upperside with 2 rows of indistinct black patches laterally. Forewing upperside with a series of very thin, black discal streaks between the veins, the series ending with an oblique apical line; similar but shorter streaks on the veins at their tips; a faint indication of discal and postdiscal transverse lines near the hind angle, and of a grey submarginal band; fringe paler between the veins, with ill-defined vein dots. Underside of both wings without markings, the long hairs of the forewing discal cell paler grey; the vein dots of the fringe better defined than on the upperside. Hindwing upperside unicolorous, the fringe white with minute, smoky grey dots.
Form butti: Metathoracic tegula with black dorsal edge. Abdomen upperside with a series of dorso-lateral black spots, and sometimes a second row below the first. Forewing upperside with a black line in the discal cell, and one or more black lines on the disc between the veins; an oblique, black, apical stripe; 2 parallel, weakly marked S-shaped discal lines, followed distally with a linear patch representing a third line near the hind margin. Underside of both wings pale grey, with poorly developed medial and postmedial bands. Hindwing underside basally paler than distal half.
FWL: 24 mm.
Females of both forms similar to the respective males but slightly larger and with broader, more rounded wings.
