Isognathus rimosa papayae (Taxonomy)
Synonymized with Isognathus scyron by B├Ânninghausen, 1899, Dt. ent. Z., Iris12: 117; then with Isognathus rimosa as a subspecies by Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool.9 (suppl.): 359. Erroneously treated as a form of Isognathus rimosa by d'Abrera, [1987], Sphingidae Mundi: 97. Reinstated as a subspecies of Isognathus rimosa (Grote) by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.12. Apart from the (?erroneous) type locality, I. r. papayae appears to be restricted to the Cordillera de M├®rida and the coastal range in Venezuela. Records from Mexico (Yucatan and Chiapas) and Nicaragua are misidentifications of I. r. inclitus, while records from Ecuador are some other species or erroneous labelling.
Forewing upperside strongly marked in brown and white. Black marginal border slightly narrower than in Isognathus rimosa inclitus. Hindwing underside with second postmedian line very prominent at costal margin (antemedian line generally absent).
