Macroglossum melas
Similar to Macroglossum heliophila, but body and wings of a much deeper colour, upper- and undersides almost black. Head upperside with a thin white line present above the eye. Abdomen upperside with yellow spots small; 4th and 5th tergites with a pair of black basal spots dorsally. Underside of palp, middle of thorax and mesial patches of abdomen white; side tufts of abdomen white-tipped. Forewing upperside slightly individually variable; similar to Macroglossum heliophila, but the pale medial area less prominent and less red. Both wings undersides grey at extreme base. Hindwing upperside black border broader than in Macroglossum heliophila, angled between veins M3 and CuA2, where the yellow band is constricted or interrupted. Hindwing underside yellow area more restricted than in Macroglossum heliophila, only reaching 3 mm. from the tip of vein 2A.
Male genitalia: Very similar to those of Macroglossum heliophila, but the harpe more slender, and the dentition at the base of the phallus not so heavy.
