Type data:
SYNTYPE(?) Surinam [coll. W. van der Meulen (?NHMUK)]. There is a male (ex coll. Van Lenep [sic], ex coll. Felder) from Surinam in the NHMUK collection. Following the same logic that Rothschild, 1919, Novit. zool. 26: 215, applied to the possible type of Sphinx oiclus, this specimen may be considered a syntype of Sphinx pluto that had passed into van Lennep's possession. Rothschild seems to have overlooked this specimen as he made no mention of it in his list of types of Sphingidae in the Tring Museum (Rothschild, 1919).
Taxonomic Notes:
Transferred (as pluto Cramer) to Madoryx by Boisduval, 1875, in: Boisduval & Guenée, Hist. nat. Insectes (Spec. gén. Lépid. Hétérocères) 1: 152.
Nomenclature notes:
Proposed as the new replacement name for Sphinx pluto Cramer.
