Taxonomy
Manduca quinquemaculatus (Haworth, 1803)
Nomenclature
Species:
Manduca quinquemaculatus (Haworth, 1803)
Usage:
valid
Type data:
Type(s) ♂ [United Kingdom] England: Chelsea (D. Drury) [?SAMA ]. A holotype could be inferred from Stephens, 1828, Illustr. Brit. Ent. (Haustellata) 1: 119. However: Rothschild (1919: 196) stated “Type: ♂, Chelsea, Haworth Coll. Ex Edwin Shepherd coll. Bought at Stevens’s Sale”. However, this may be the second specimen referred to by Donovan (1806: 3) captured somewhat later “in the vicinity of Little Chelsea”, according to Haworth himself. How Rothschild came to acquire the specimen is not clear as Edwin Shepherd was an employee of the BM, and so should not (?) have had a private collection. The specimen originally described by Haworth, which he did not see, was originally in Drury’s collection and then passed to Donovan (1806: 2). It may now be in SAMA. More study is required to untangle the full history of these two specimens.
Taxonomic Notes:
Transferred to Manduca by Hodges, 1971, in Dominick et al., Moths Amer. N. of Mexico 21: 29 (key), 31 (as ‡quinquemaculata).
Nomenclature notes:
The incorrect original orthography was "5-maculatus".
