Type data:
Type(s) West Indies [coll. E. de Marre]. Rothschild, 1919, Novit. zool. 26: 203, stated that there was a male specimen from the collection of J.C.S. Van Lenep, via coll Felder, in the Tring Museum. Van Lenep was a contemporary of Cramer and his collection was at the latter's disposal during the writing the Uitlandsche Kapellen (Papillons exot.). Many of the species in that work were described and figured from this collection and although this was not the case with Sphinx cluentius, Rothschild considered that the specimen in question could quite correctly be classed as a "cotype", as it was before Cramer at the time of writing. However, this specimen is labelled "No. 1 CLUENTIUS Cr. I, 78B & II, 126A". M.R. Honey (pers. comm.) believes that this is the second specimen, a female from Surinam (ex Mr G.J. Schutt), referred to by Cramer, 1776, Uitlandsche Kapellen (Papillons exot.) 1: 43, and is therefore not a cotype.

Transferred back to Cocytius by d'Abrera, 1987, Sphingidae Mundi: 22. Returned to Neococytius by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.17.
