Taxonomic Notes:
Synonymized with Pseudoclanis occidentalis by Kitching and Rougerie et al., 2018, Biodivers. Data J. 6: e22236.
In habitus, Pseudoclanis axis is smaller and paler than Pseudoclanis occidentalis, with reduced black markings. There are no differences in the male genitalia. In the female genitalia, Eitschberger (2007) noted that in the one female available to him the teeth postero-lateral to the ostium bursae are turned apically posteriorly, but the shape of these teeth is highly individually variable in Pseudoclanis, often differing between left and right sides in one individual, and is not valid as a species diagnostic character. A single Pseudoclanis axis DNA barcode sequence is deeply nested among those of Pseudoclanis occidentalis and Pseudoclanis biokoensis in BoLD and the distributions based on the identifications of northern Cameroon Pseudoclanis occidentalis and Pseudoclanis axis overlap considerably. Consequently, Pseudoclanis axis is here considered to be simply a small, pale, arid habitat form of Pseudoclanis occidentalis.
