Taxonomic Notes:
SYN. REV.
Proposed as a subspecies of Meganoton rufescens [sic]. Synonymized with Psilogramma menephron menephron by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 64. Raised to species status by Eitschberger, 2001, Neue ent. Nachr. 52: 7.
Psilogramma joachimi was reinstated as a species by Eitschberger (2001: 8) (STI 17722) without no justification other than stating: “Possibly the population of Seram is a subspecies of Ps. menephron. See also Psilogramma menephron” and under Psilogramma menephron: “My assumption that the population from the neighbouring Seram/Ceram is identical to that from Ambon does not seem to be correct. In Brechlin (2001: 44. fig. 54), the illustrated details of the male genitalia from Seram do not agree with those from Ambon. Thus the distribution of Ps. menephron would be limited to Ambon, so that Psilogramma joachimi stat. rev. et stat. nov. flies on Seram.” However, the disagreement is actually due to Brechlin (2001) (STI 16988) incorrectly illustrating the male genitalia of a "Psilogramma menephron" (recte Psilogramma discistriga medicieloi) from Negros (R. Brechlin, pers. comm.). There are no consistent differences in habitus or genital structure between Psilogramma joachimi and Psilogramma menephron. As Psilogramma joachimi otherwise shares the shorter and more rounded forewing of Psilogramma menephron menephron it is here considered to be a junior synonym of the nominotypical subspecies of Psilogramma menephron.
