HOLOTYPE ♂ Angola : Chinchoxo (Falkenstein) [MNHU].
The holotype is a small specimen and var. gigas refers to normally sized specimens (Carcasson, 1968, Jl E. Afr. nat. Hist. Soc. natn. Mus. 26 (3): 11).
Taxonomic Notes:
The incorrect original orthography was "güssfeldtii". Transferred to Acanthosphinx by Aurivillius, 1891, Ent. Tidskr. 12: 228. Transferred to Polyptychus by Pierre, 2014, Bull. Soc. Ent. Fr. 119: 225.
